Gratitude keeps hardship from stealing joy

“Never empower anybody to take away your joy.”

The khateeb, at 13:01

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that believers should anchor themselves in the Quran, practice gratitude, and keep Allah, not changing circumstances or possessions, as their focus so hardship cannot steal their joy or harm their families.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Life's hardships test people's responses, and the Quran can serve as an anchor.
  2. Gratitude brings increase, while ingratitude allows Shaitan to magnify what people lack.
  3. Believers should preserve graciousness and reject Shaitan's negative narratives about family and life.
  4. The blessing is secondary; Allah, the blesser, should remain the believer's true objective.
  5. Focusing on present blessings and smiling at home can bring peace to families.

For the dinner table

The khateeb reminded us that life brings pressures like waves hitting a boat, and that the Quran can help anchor our response. He encouraged us to practise gratitude by noticing what Allah has given us instead of dwelling on what we lack. He pointed to the Prophet’s smile despite hardship and urged us to bring ease and peace into our homes through warm greetings. He also reminded us to remember graciousness between people, even during conflict. Above all, he asked us to keep our relationship with Allah, the giver of blessings, at the centre of our lives rather than making possessions our main purpose.

  2. When your day feels like a boat in rough waves, what helps you remember Allah?
  3. How could we make coming home feel more peaceful for everyone this week?
