How tawassul brings us closer to Allah

“If you can go to Owais and ask Owais to seek forgiveness on behalf of you, do so.”

The khateeb, at 7:00

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that tawassul, seeking nearness to Allah through the Prophet, Ahlul Bayt, and righteous servants, is an Islamic practice supported by Quran and hadith, including after the Prophet’s passing, provided Allah alone is believed to act independently.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces tawassul as an Ahlul Bayt practice and addresses objections to it.
  2. Uses Quranic passages about seeking wasila and the Prophet seeking forgiveness.
  3. Cites Umar seeking rain through Abbas and the Prophet’s recommendation of Uways.
  4. Explains that verses about the dead concern spiritual refusal of truth, not a prohibition of tawassul.
  5. Uses hadith about the Prophet receiving believers’ deeds and supplicating for Fatima bint Asad.
  6. Reminds the community about anti-Muslim violence, peaceful response, religious observances, and upcoming programs.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah explained tawassul, the practice of seeking nearness to Allah through the Prophet, Ahlul Bayt, and other righteous servants. The khateeb argued from Quranic passages and reported traditions that this practice is permissible even after the Prophet’s passing, as long as Muslims believe Allah alone has independent power. He also reminded us to respond to attacks and injustice with love, peace, solidarity, and concern for accountability. Finally, he invited families to join the Day of Arafah worship, Hajj simulation, and a practical prayer-pronunciation workshop. The message was to deepen faith, protect one another, and turn remembrance into community action.

  1. Where do you see a chance this week to spread love and peace?
  2. What does it mean to ask Allah for help through a respected righteous person?
  3. Which community program or act of worship would you like our family to join, and why?
