Allah hears every sincere dua

“We do not have to shout in order for Allah to hear us.”

The khateeb, at 3:49

In one sentence

Because Allah is al-Sami', the One who fully hears, understands, and responds, believers should turn to Him with sincere dua, praise Him, humble themselves, and guard their speech and actions knowing every deed is heard and recorded.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Introduces humanity's need to be heard and Allah as al-Sami', the All-Hearing.
  2. Uses Quranic and prophetic examples to show Allah hears, understands, and responds to spoken and unspoken prayers.
  3. Connects Allah's hearing to praising Him and making dua in prostration.
  4. Urges believers to take their troubles to Allah and develop a relationship beyond repeatedly asking for favors.
  5. Warns that Allah hears secret speech and that body parts will testify about deeds on Judgment Day.
  6. Closes by encouraging purification of the heart, humility, dua, and reliance on Allah during hardship.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

The sermon teaches that Allah is al-Sami', the One who hears every spoken word, quiet prayer, and unspoken feeling. Because Allah is near and responds with wisdom, we should speak to Him honestly, praise Him, and make dua especially in sujood. We should not treat prayer as a transaction; we should build a loving relationship with Allah and take our troubles to Him. The khutbah also reminds us that our words and actions are never lost, so we should purify our hearts and use our tongues, hands, and eyes carefully. When we feel lonely or overwhelmed, we can find comfort in knowing Allah hears us and is able to bring ease.

  1. When do you feel most comfortable talking honestly to Allah?
  2. What is one way we can listen more carefully to someone in our family?
  3. Which part of our daily behavior should we guard more carefully this week?
