Parents must raise children for the Hereafter
“We have to be present with our children.”
Parents, especially fathers, must treat raising children as an amanah by modeling faith, offering love and guidance, and preparing them for success in the Hereafter.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines fatherhood as spiritual leadership, education, guidance, protection, and role modeling, not merely provision.
- Argues that a parent's greatest investment is the child's connection to Allah and success in the Hereafter.
- Explains that children absorb parents' behavior and are a trust for which parents will be accountable.
- Addresses teenagers' hidden struggles and calls parents to create a safe home for honest conversation.
- Connects effective tarbiyah with children's lifelong faith and ongoing reward after parents' deaths.
- Closes with practical actions and dua, followed by announcements for a book launch and community picnic.
In the khateeb's words
“Rather, the greatest investment a father can make is to secure the connection of their children with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and always be worried and concerned concerning their success of the hereafter.”
“So no matter what age our children are at, no matter what age our children have reached, they are not possessions, but rather they are a huge responsibility, an amanah, and we are going to be asked in front of Allah.”
“But the children will never forget how we made them feel.”
“We have to be present with our children. We have to be patient. We have to be merciful. We have to be a leader through example.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds parents that raising children is more than providing food, clothing, education, and comfort. Children are an amanah from Allah, and parents are responsible for teaching faith, modeling good character, and protecting their family's connection to the Hereafter. The speaker encourages parents to make home a place of love, patience, mercy, and honest conversation so children can bring their struggles without fear. He also urges families to combine daily effort with dua, including the Quranic prayer for righteous spouses and children. The hope is that good tarbiyah will create lasting faith and ongoing reward beyond a parent's lifetime.
- What is one kind or patient behavior you would like people in our home to remember?
- What could make it easier for you to talk with a parent when something is hard?
