Ramadan prayer needs quality, not quantity

“Slow it down, worry about quality, not quantity.”

The khateeb, at 26:30

In one sentence

A meaningful Ramadan should pursue the Prophet's quality of salah, focused, tranquil, grateful, and consistent, rather than merely counting rak'ahs, while extending that practice beyond Ramadan.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Calls listeners to set individual and collective Ramadan goals.
  2. Introduces Prophetic salah as a question of prayer quality, not just number of rak'ahs.
  3. Uses Qur'an listening guidance and the Prophet's emotional, grateful prayer to stress attentiveness.
  4. Contrasts the Prophet's balanced worship with companions' vows of extreme fasting, night prayer, and celibacy.
  5. Explains tranquility in each posture through the hadith of the man told to repeat his prayer.
  6. Urges gradual, focused, consistent prayer through Ramadan and beyond, then briefly asks for regular sadaqah.
Try this week
Set an individual or collective Ramadan goal involving Qur'an recitation, extra prayer, learning, or masjid attendance.
Listen attentively and quietly when Qur'an is recited; turn it off rather than using it as background noise when unable to focus.
Slow down the five daily prayers and increase prayer time gradually.
Continue a small Qur'an or worship habit after Ramadan, even if it is only five ayats.
Give sadaqah consistently each Jumu'ah and support the masjid or another worthy establishment.

For the dinner table

The khateeb encouraged us to set Ramadan goals, both for ourselves and together. His main message was to improve the quality of our salah by following the Prophet’s example of gratitude, attention, and care. He reminded us to listen carefully to the Qur’an and to find peace and tranquility in each part of prayer instead of rushing. When we pray, we are speaking directly to Allah, so we should take our time and pay attention to what we are saying. He also encouraged us to keep worship and giving consistent, carrying our good habits beyond Ramadan.

  1. What is one Ramadan goal our family could work on together?
  2. What blessing could you think about with gratitude before your next prayer?
  3. What small act of worship or giving would you like to keep doing after Ramadan?
