Serving the ummah brings Allah’s help
“If you have the pain in serving the ummah and doing something for Islam, there is a lot of work.”
The khutbah argues that Allah’s help and communal success come when Muslims overcome selfishness, use their distinct abilities, and actively serve the ummah through outreach, youth development, strong institutions, and social welfare.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Opens with the principle that supporting Allah’s deen brings divine help and success.
- Contrasts today’s numbers and resources with the early Muslims’ perseverance and identifies selfishness as an obstacle.
- Uses Sahaba examples to show that service can take many forms, especially Zayd ibn Thabit’s language and scholarly contributions.
- Calls for youth leadership, da'wah, waqf, social welfare, feeding people, and visiting homeless shelters.
- Closes with supplications and the call to prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“There's so many different avenues. That we can be of service. For Muslims and Islam.”
“Give orphans their rights. Uphold hospitality. Don't neglect the neighbors. He spoke these general universal values.”
“We need to do a better job with social welfare. You know, Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, Right? Go feed people. That's the best way to spread da'wah.”
“This is the real work. So if you have the pain in serving the ummah and doing something for Islam, there is a lot of work.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Allah’s help comes when people commit themselves to serving His religion and their community. The Sahaba showed that everyone can contribute differently: Zayd ibn Thabit used language and writing, while Ja'far ibn Abi Talib explained Islam through truth, mercy, hospitality, and care for neighbors. We are urged to move beyond selfishness and build stronger youth leadership, outreach, waqf, and social welfare. Families can begin by noticing their gifts and choosing one practical way to serve others, such as feeding people or visiting homeless shelters.
- What is one skill you have that could help someone else?
- How can our family practice caring for neighbors this week?
- Which community project would you most like to help build?
