Gratitude should lead to worship and service
“When we remember to be grateful, it becomes fuel for our dua, for charity, for volunteering, for advocacy.”
Our blessings should not produce paralyzing guilt but gratitude that leads us to worship Allah and actively serve people facing hardship.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Amani warns against judging others and urges dua, kindness, and self-correction.
- Jenda reframes uncertainty as an opportunity for active tawakkul and deeper reliance on Allah.
- The khutbah introduces first-world guilt arising from comfort amid global suffering.
- Gratitude means recognizing Allah’s blessings and transforming guilt into worship and service.
- Listeners are urged toward dua, charity, volunteering, advocacy, and kindness.
- The khutbah closes with prayers for suffering communities, guidance, patience, and compassion.
In the khateeb's words
“The unknown is where the heart learns to depend on Allah completely.”
“It wants to transform that feeling into gratitude and action.”
“If Allah has given you wealth, you give it to the poor. If Allah has given you safety, you advocate for those who don't have it.”
“Because when we remember to be grateful, it becomes fuel for our dua, for charity, for volunteering, for advocacy.”
For the dinner table
Today’s Junior Jum’ah reminded us not to judge people, because we do not know their stories or where their hearts may go. We were also taught that uncertainty can bring us closer to Allah when we plan, work, and trust Him with the outcome. The khutbah then explored the guilt we may feel while living comfortably as others face war, poverty, or fear. Rather than staying stuck in guilt, we should answer Allah’s blessings with gratitude, dua, charity, volunteering, advocacy, and kindness. Our comfort is a test and an opportunity to lift others up while asking Allah to ease suffering and keep us on the right path.
- What blessing do you have that could become a way to help someone else?
- How can trusting Allah help when you do not know what will happen next?
- What is one way we can replace judging someone with kindness this week?
