Know Allah’s names and seek His light
“Reading Surah Al-Kahf correctly, as well as striving to understand its contents and comply with them, are certainly righteous deeds.”
The khutbah urges believers to deepen worship by learning Allah’s names, especially Allah, Ar-Rabb, and Al-Malik, and seeking divine light through Friday recitation of Surah Al-Kahf, understanding its guidance, and truthful obedience.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The opening calls listeners to taqwa, truthful speech, obedience, and maintaining kinship.
- The speaker introduces al-Sa'di’s discussion of Allah’s names in the Qur’an and Sunnah.
- Allah, Ar-Rabb, and Al-Malik are explained as names expressing worship, nurturing, sovereignty, ownership, and authority.
- The khutbah discusses narrations associating Friday recitation of Surah Al-Kahf with divine light.
- The speaker explains light in this life, the grave, and the Hereafter, then concludes with supplications for guidance, truthfulness, balance, and Qur’anic comfort.
In the khateeb's words
“He is the one who deserves to be worshipped by all creatures, and He is the only one to whom all creatures are subservient, and to whom they must devote all of their worship.”
“The one Supreme Lord is the one who nurtures all of His servants in a general way, by regulating all matters for them, and by granting them blessings of all types.”
“And reading Surah Al-Kahf correctly, as well as striving to understand its contents and comply with them, are certainly righteous deeds due to which a person can hope to be granted light by Allah while in the grave.”
“We also ask you to let us say the truth whether we are pleased or angry and whether saying the truth causes people to become pleased with us or angry with us.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that Allah is the only One worthy of worship and that He is our Lord, nurturer, Sovereign, and Owner. The speaker encouraged us to read Surah Al-Kahf on Friday and to seek the light that comes from reading it correctly, understanding it, and living by its guidance. That light can mean guidance in this life and hope for light in the grave and Hereafter. We were also reminded to ask Allah for truthful speech, balance, and a heart filled with the Qur’an. This week, we can make the surah, honest speech, and sincere supplication part of our family routine.
- What kind of guidance or “light” do you most want Allah to give you this week?
- How can we practice saying the truth kindly when we are angry or when someone may disagree with us?
- What would it look like to understand and live by one lesson from Surah Al-Kahf?
