Security is a victory worth thanking Allah for
“I have actually given you a triumphant victory.”
Apparent setbacks and the safety people take for granted can both be tests from Allah, so believers should recognize security as a victory and respond with gratitude, worship, service, and concern for others.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Introduces the Quranic theme that appearances can conceal what is truly good or harmful.
- Retells the Treaty of Hudaybiya, including the blocked pilgrimage, difficult terms, and Abu Jandal’s return.
- Explains that the treaty’s peace and freedom to worship constituted a triumphant victory.
- Connects security and insecurity in places such as Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, and Afghanistan to divine testing.
- Calls listeners to gratitude through worship, charity, neighborly care, reconciliation, family ties, and prayer for global safety.
In the khateeb's words
“But looks may be deceiving. As they thought that they were taking the short end of the stick and they were returning back to Medina, Allah revealed, I have actually given you a triumphant victory.”
“That conquest, that victory, that triumphant victory is what? Truce, treaty, peace. The ability to worship Allah azza wa jal and not be bothered. That is a victory.”
“He's testing us to see if we're going to show gratitude for the safety and security. Are we going to go to worship Him? Are we going to make sure we put Allah first?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah teaches that Allah may hide a victory inside something that feels like a loss. The story of Hudaybiyyah shows the Prophet and his companions accepting a painful treaty and delayed Umrah, yet the peace allowed them to worship without interference. The safety we enjoy is also a test, especially when many people elsewhere live with fear, hunger, and violence. We should thank Allah by worshipping Him, helping others, repairing grudges, caring for neighbors, and praying for safety for people everywhere.
- Where might Allah be hiding a blessing in a situation that feels disappointing?
- What is one act of gratitude you can do for someone who needs help this week?
- How can our family use safety as a reason to worship and serve others?
