Use Allah’s gifts with humility
“Your intelligence is a gift from Allah.”
The khutbah argues that Allah’s blessings, especially wealth, intelligence, and success, must produce humility, gratitude, generosity, and service, while believers make the Hereafter their ultimate goal and guard against arrogance and corruption.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Begins with gratitude for faith, Islam, the masjid, family, health, comfort, and other blessings.
- Introduces Qarun from Surah al-Qasas as a warning about misusing divine gifts.
- Explains the advice to prioritize the Hereafter, enjoy worldly life moderately, do good, and avoid corruption.
- Identifies Qarun’s arrogance in claiming self-made success, flaunting wealth, and oppressing others.
- Contrasts patience during hardship with gratitude and humility during prosperity.
- Closes by urging listeners to examine their motives, practice humility, and prepare for the Hereafter.
In the khateeb's words
“Enjoy this world, but have your focus, have your projects, have your ultimate goal be building the house of the next life.”
“Your intelligence is a gift from Allah . Your good looks are a gift from Allah . Your success is a gift from Allah .”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us of Allah’s many blessings, including faith, food, safe homes, friends, and family. Through the story of Qarun, he warned that wealth and success can lead us into arrogance when we forget who gave them to us. We can enjoy our blessings in moderation while using them to do good and prepare for the next life. In difficult times, patience means continuing to worship and call upon Allah; in happy times, it means being grateful and using our blessings to benefit others. He encouraged each of us to examine our hearts so that our goals come from a desire to serve Allah and help others rather than to show our superiority.
- What blessing could you thank Allah for today, and how could you share its benefit?
- When you do well at something, how can you celebrate while being kind to others?
- What is one goal you have, and how could reaching it help someone else?
