Notice the blessings already around you
“Aafia is you asking Allah to give you an easy examination.”
The khutbah argues that Muslims should recognize the immense afiyah already surrounding them, ask Allah to preserve it, and channel their comfort into gratitude, worship, restraint, and helping others.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines afiyah as protection from sin’s consequences and life’s crippling trials.
- Uses prophetic duas and narrations to emphasize seeking afiyah in this life and the next.
- Shows how American Muslims often live amid extraordinary comfort yet quickly normalize it.
- Teaches reframing ordinary blessings by imagining life without health, safety, or comfort.
- Explains how the Sahaba responded cautiously to ease and worldly abundance.
- Gives three applications: increase worship, avoid sin, and create ease for others; closes with prayers for Gaza and Muslims worldwide.
In the khateeb's words
“Aafia is you asking Allah to give you an easy examination.”
“Next time you're sitting at a cafe, Sipping your favorite latte. I want you to appreciate that moment. What that would look like if you didn't have aafiyah.”
“You don't ask Allah for bala and trials. What you do is that you use your ghafia and channel it into extra good deeds and hard work.”
For the dinner table
Afiyah means Allah’s protection and well-being in this life and the next, especially protection from crippling trials. The khateeb reminded us that health, safety, comfortable homes, reliable food, and the ability to worship are blessings we can quickly stop noticing. We should practice reframing by imagining life without a blessing, then thank Allah for it. Our ease should lead us to more worship, restraint from sin, and practical help for people who are struggling. We should also keep people in Gaza and across the Muslim world in our duas.
- What blessing would be hardest for you to lose, and how can you thank Allah for it today?
- How can we use something comfortable in our lives to help someone else?
- What extra good deed could we do this week because Allah has made our lives easier?
