Gratitude begins with seeing each day as a gift

“The believer views every single day as a bonus day.”

The khateeb, at 7:32

In one sentence

The hadith 'whoever wakes up safe in his dwelling, healthy in his body, and possessing the day's provision, it is as if the whole world were gathered for him' teaches that real gratitude means recognizing each day as a gift and responding with contentment, presence, and obedience to Allah.

The khutbah in 3 steps

  1. Opening praise and call to renew submission to Allah every Jumu'ah
  2. The Prophet's speech, actions, and even silence are revelation, so make his words daily family practice
  3. Second half: gratitude defined, iman in the heart, praise on the tongue, worship in the limbs; even the little deserves immense shukr
Try this week
Keep a hadith collection at home (40 Hadith, Riyadh al-Saliheen, Bukhari/Muslim) and read one advice daily with family
Begin each morning with the dua of gratitude (Allahumma ma asbaha bi min ni'matin...), recognizing family, home, and health as Allah's gifts
Do not take safety for granted; care for those without it (Gaza, Sudan, the homeless in Chicago) and make your own home a sanctuary for spouse and children
Stop anxiously planning for an unguaranteed future; be present with children and spouse today
When asked how you are doing, answer with praise rather than constant complaint, attributing blessings to Allah
Prove gratitude in the limbs: keep up prayers, avoid immorality and addictive substances, and use worldly blessings to build the akhira

For the dinner table

This Jumu'ah, Sh. Tariq Musleh taught us about a beautiful hadith: whoever wakes up safe in their home, healthy in their body, and with enough food for just that day, it is as if the whole world has been gathered for them. He reminded us that every morning is a miracle and a bonus day, because many people did not wake up today. He warned that because our blessings keep coming every day, like our eyes blinking, we start to think they are ordinary and forget they are from Allah. He also said that if Allah gave us safety in our homes, we must make our homes safe and comforting for our spouse and children, and care about people in Gaza, Sudan, and even the streets of Chicago who do not have that safety. Real gratitude, he explained, is not just saying alhamdulillah, it is feeling it in the heart, speaking praise on the tongue, and showing it in our actions and prayers. The khutbah ended with a question for all of us: now that Allah has given us the world, what will we do with it to build our akhira?

  1. What is one blessing you have every single day that you usually don't even notice?
  2. If today were a 'bonus day' you didn't expect to get, how would you want to spend it?
