Serve the community where needs arise
In one sentence
Believers should imitate the companions by seeking and fulfilling their community's most urgent needs, even when doing so requires leaving their preferred roles and overcoming selfishness.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Jumu'ah establishes a foundation of communal guidance and spiritual formation.
- The companions continually sought the next opportunity for righteous action rather than settling.
- Abdurrahman bin Awf exemplified sacrifice, resilience, and rebuilding through useful contribution.
- The Prophet and companions participated directly when the community faced urgent needs.
- Everyday service, including cleaning and welcoming others, can be worship when it meets the moment's need.
Try this week
Prioritize attending Jumu'ah where it is obligatory, treating it as a foundation for guidance.
Look for immediate community needs and serve even outside your usual skill set, such as cleaning the masjid or greeting someone alone.
Keep seeking the next opportunity for good rather than assuming one contribution is enough.
Attend the Riyan Centre fundraiser at Plymouth Manor around Maghrib, or support it financially if unable to attend.
Remember to vote in the upcoming elections and attend the family program the following Friday.
Sources the khateeb cited
Surah 59The Ansar are praised for loving immigrants, preferring them despite their own needs, and overcoming selfishness.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“when good would be facilitated by Allah in their lives, when doors of doing goodness would be opened, the next question would be, okay, what's the next door?”
“The doors of contribution to our ummah, they are not based on finances alone.”
“find your place and find the needs that are around you in the moment as they arise.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that worship is not only prayer or donating money. When we see a need, such as cleaning a masjid space or greeting someone who is alone, we should be willing to help even if it is not our usual role. The khutbah encouraged us to keep looking for the next opportunity to do good instead of deciding that we have done enough. It also reminded us that generosity means making room for others, even when we have our own needs. As a family, we can ask what need is in front of us this week and respond with time, care, or resources.
- What is one need you noticed this week that you could help meet?
- When have you helped in a way that was outside your usual role?
- How can our family make room for someone else this week?
