A mosque comes alive through its people
“Let's try to become a community that is welcoming.”
The masjid comes alive not through its building alone but through believers who worship, care for it, welcome others, and support their community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Welcomes a new Muslim and reflects on the testimony of faith.
- Explains bringing the masjid to life through belief, prayer, charity, and reverence for Allah.
- Connects global persecution with the community’s responsibility to strengthen faith and serve others.
- Calls for a clean, beautiful, accessible, and welcoming mosque.
- Urges congregational prayer, support for smaller prayer spaces, neighborly care, and unity across ethnic backgrounds.
- Closes with supplications for Muslims suffering worldwide and condolences for a convert’s deceased mother.
In the khateeb's words
“The place that we come, the place that we worship, the place that we find solace and comfort.”
“Let's try to become a community that is welcoming. There is no just one way, we come from so many different backgrounds and experiences and cultures”
“Cleanliness is part of our faith. not just the house of Allah but even our own homes. Even our bathrooms should be in a good clean situation.”
“We are one Ummah. We come from all different backgrounds, different cultures, different understanding. different practices of our own tradition, different ways of doing things.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah welcomed a new Muslim and reminded us that the masjid is more than a building: it becomes alive through prayer, faith, service, and care. We can honor the masjid by keeping it clean, coming prepared for Jumu'ah, and making room for people with different needs and backgrounds. The speaker encouraged us to attend congregational prayer, support smaller prayer spaces, learn who around us needs help, and reject ethnic divisions. He also asked us to remember Muslims suffering in Gaza and elsewhere, and ended with prayers for a recently deceased convert's mother. The message is that every person can help make the mosque a place of worship, belonging, and practical mercy.
- What is one way we can make our mosque or home more welcoming?
- Who around us might need help or friendship this week?
- What does it mean to be one Ummah while having different cultures?
