Strong families follow the Prophet's sunnah

“The best of you is the one who's best to his family.”

The khateeb, at 21:19

In one sentence

A strong marriage and family life is built by emulating the Prophet's sunnah at home, presence, gratitude, generosity, and emotional attunement, and by couples competing together in worship and service to Allah.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Opening praises and reminder that summer is the time to invest in family
  2. Surah al-Rum: marriage is the second great miracle after creation, marked by mawadda and rahma
  3. The Prophet's own conduct at home: serving his family, full presence like the full moon
  4. Surah al-Anbiya formula via Zakariya: compete together in good deeds, pray together in hope and fear, stay humble before Allah
  5. Closing duas for families, the sick, and the oppressed worldwide
Try this week
Make your entrances and exits from home memorable: don't rush, hug everyone, take time with each family member
Express verbal gratitude to your spouse for small and big things, including the sunnah of gifts at milestones like childbirth and weaning
Read your spouse's body language and initiate care before they have to ask
Compete with your spouse in good deeds, match and raise each other's donations, volunteering, and sponsorships
Bring the family together for dua and salah in moments of hope and fear (exams, travel, illness)
Guard time for qiyam, Quran, and dhikr so you come home present and centered rather than depleted
Be the first person your spouse runs to: listen without judgment, build with words, and invest time and resources in their vision

For the dinner table

Shaykh Hosam Helal reminded us that summer is the time to invest in our families, and that in the Quran, right after the miracle of life itself, Allah names marriage and family as one of His greatest signs, a home meant to be filled with love, mercy, and tranquility. He shared the story of Talha ibn Ubaidullah, who took seventeen arrows for the Prophet and still stood tall to spare him any guilt, and whose wife described him as a real man whose entrance filled the room with laughter, who gave before being asked, and who showed gratitude for every small thing. He also showed how Khadijah was the first person the Prophet ran to in his moment of fear, she sheltered him, spoke words that built him up, and was the first to believe in him and invest in his mission. The Prophet himself was always serving his family at home and was fully present with whoever he was with, like a full moon rather than a crescent. Finally, from the story of Zekariya, he gave three keys to a blessed home: compete together in doing good, pray and make dua together in hope and in fear, and stay humble and available for Allah and for one another.

  1. If our family competed with each other to do good deeds this week, what would you want to win at?
  2. The Prophet was like a full moon when he was with people, fully there, no distractions. When do you feel like I'm only a crescent with you?
  3. Who is the first person you would run to if something scary happened, and what makes them that person for you?
