Build your life around the everlasting
“We should build our priorities, we should build our goals, we should try to structure our life, seeking what is everlasting with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
Belief in the unseen counters materialism by redirecting priorities toward Allah, the afterlife, sincere worship, and accountability.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with prayers for Muslims facing violence, then identifies materialism and overreliance on worldly means as widespread problems.
- Explains belief in the unseen through Quranic descriptions of taqwa, accountability, the afterlife, and realities beyond the senses.
- Uses prophetic teachings about skyscraper-building shepherds and the Dajjal to show how materialism and sensory deception can mislead people.
- Presents Surah al-Kahf and its stories as protection from the Dajjal and lessons in faith, detachment, and hidden wisdom.
- Gives practical guidance: remember the world's brevity, cultivate private good deeds, practice moderate zuhd, and prepare for death.
- Concludes by urging worship with awareness of Allah, followed by supplication and communal prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“The death is not the ultimate end. It is rather the beginning to another part of our journey,”
“People's over-reliance on their senses is going to be used to misguide them from Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la.”
“So we should build our priorities, we should build our goals, we should try to structure our life, seeking what is everlasting with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala”
“worship Allah as if you see Him and prepare yourself for death.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that this life is temporary, and that our hopes and plans should include our meeting with Allah. Belief in the unseen helps us remember that there is more to life than what we can see or own. We should turn to Allah with trust and prayer, then take practical steps toward what we need. Our time, health, money, and abilities are blessings that we will be asked about, so we should use them thoughtfully in His service. He encouraged us to remember how brief life is, do good deeds privately, and avoid becoming absorbed in luxuries, helping us grow in sincerity and attentiveness in worship.
- How could remembering Allah change the way you prepare for something difficult this week?
- What are some kind things a person could do without anyone finding out?
- How could we use one blessing our family has to help someone else?
