Purify your soul to find true success
“Don't corrupt your soul because you're going to go to the fire.”
The khutbah teaches that Allah's repeated oaths in Surah ash-Shams emphasize that true success comes from purifying the soul by resisting selfish desires, doing good, and seeking Allah's help.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces Surah ash-Shams and its repeated oaths.
- Uses contrasts in creation to emphasize the seriousness of the message.
- Distinguishes the soul, desires, heart, and mind while affirming moral awareness.
- Warns that purification leads to paradise while corruption leads to failure and hellfire.
- Applies purification to charity, resisting miserliness, and not acting on harmful thoughts.
- Concludes with a prophetic supplication and encouragement to attend a Sunday community gathering.
In the khateeb's words
“Allah is swearing to wake us up and say, don't corrupt your soul because you're going to go to the fire.”
“But if your stomach is full, gas tank is full, you can share.”
“Thought goes through your mind, you don't act on it, you don't speak on it, you can leave it alone.”
“This life is going to seem like a day or less than a day even if we're here 80, 90, 100 years.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah focused on the message of Surah ash-Shams: people succeed when they purify their souls and fail when they corrupt them. We were reminded that Allah gives us an awareness of right and wrong, but we must train ourselves to resist selfish desires. Sharing money, time, and help is part of purification, while unwanted thoughts do not become sins unless we choose to speak or act on them. The sermon ended by encouraging us to ask Allah to purify our souls and protect us from laziness, cowardice, and miserliness.
- What is one selfish desire you would like to manage better this week?
- When has someone shared their time or help with you in a meaningful way?
- What would it look like for our family to purify our souls together?
