Do not trade the akhirah for dunya

“You have sacrificed the akhira for the dunya again, and then you do not even get the dunya.”

The khateeb, at 13:54

In one sentence

Worldly success and immediate gratification are not proof of Allah's pleasure; when dunya becomes our destination, it can make us lose both worlds, so we must use blessings to return to Allah and prepare for the akhirah.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Defines modern dunya as glamorous, achievement-driven, and spiritually distracting.
  2. Explains the first Qur'anic warning: worldly openings after forgetting Allah can end suddenly.
  3. Uses the concept of the immediate life to warn against instant gratification and sacrificing the akhirah.
  4. Explores security in dunya, heedlessness of divine signs, and making dunya the destination.
  5. Closes with three responses: detach from wealth-based measures, live as a traveler, and reconnect with Allah.
Try this week
Stop evaluating Allah's pleasure by wealth, status, or worldly success.
Treat dunya as temporary, like a traveler treats a stop rather than a permanent home.
Reconnect with Allah by repairing neglected salah, returning to the mosque, and correcting haram transactions.
Use each morning's supplication to remember returning to Allah and being accountable for every action.
Turn today's khutbah into concrete daily implementation rather than merely checking off attendance.

Talk about it at home

For the dinner table

Allah may give us jobs, money, education, homes, and other blessings, but those gifts do not prove that He is pleased with us. The real question is whether a blessing brings us closer to Allah or pulls us away from prayer, modesty, honesty, and the mosque. The khutbah reminds us that dunya is temporary, like a travel stop, while the akhirah is our lasting home. We should stop measuring success by wealth, reconnect with Allah, repair neglected worship and transactions, and remember each morning that we will return to Him. May our blessings become roads to Allah rather than distractions from Him.

  1. What blessing in your life helps you remember Allah, and what blessing might distract you?
  2. If dunya is like a temporary travel stop, what matters most before we continue our journey?
  3. What is one small change you can make this week to protect your salah or connection with Allah?
