Faith is proven through service to others
“Your wealth and your children are only a test.”
Because life, family, wealth, loss, and hardship are tests from Allah, Muslims should respond with trust, steadfast service, mutual care, and community-building that benefits others beyond their own lifetimes.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Reflects on year-end births, deaths, grief, and remembering deceased community members.
- Teaches that wealth and children are tests, and hardship should turn believers toward Allah.
- Praises the masjid as an inclusive community serving newcomers, neighbors, returning prisoners, and people in need.
- Connects steadfast faith with dua, humanitarian aid, dawah, and building Islamic institutions.
- Honors deceased and ill members, students, and the Imam’s service while emphasizing mutual community rights.
- Closes with prayers, community announcements, masjid support, and a departing student’s gratitude.
In the khateeb's words
“your wealth and your children are only a test. And that with Allah is a great reward.”
“We aren't doing anybody a favor. When we're sick. That we do go visit each other. We check on each other. We call on each other.”
“When you truly believe. That there is a life. After this life. And you truly believe. That we only get there through. Not our words. But through our actions.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminds us that the end of a year is a time to remember both blessings and people we have lost. Our wealth, children, education, and abilities are gifts from Allah and tests of how we will use them. When life becomes painful or uncertain, we should turn toward Allah with trust and continue serving others. A strong Muslim community welcomes people, cares for the sick and grieving, supports those in need, and helps young people grow. Our actions today can leave goodness that continues after we are gone.
- What is one way our family can serve someone this week?
- Who in our community could use a call, visit, or dua?
- How can we make someone new feel at home?
