True success means clinging to Allah together
“There's only one rope, but we have to hold on to it together.”
True success is reaching Jannah by clinging to Allah through the Qur'an and Sunnah, remaining united with the Muslim community, and guiding one's family away from false refuges.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines success as entering Jannah rather than achieving worldly wealth or comfort.
- Explains Surah Ali Imran 101, 103 as a recipe for success through taqwa and submission.
- Defines i'tisam as clinging firmly to Allah for protection and guidance.
- Identifies the Qur'an and Sunnah as Allah's rope and urges communal unity.
- Uses the story of Nuh, his ark, and his son to illustrate obedience and the limits of parental guidance.
- Applies Nuh's story to concerns about Muslim children losing their connection to Islam, then concludes with recitation and prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“The key, brothers and sisters, is i'tisam. This is the word for today. Take it home with you. Study it.”
“The waves of this dunya are sweeping our children at an astronomical rate.”
For the dinner table
Imam Muhammad Abdullah reminded us that our deepest success is reaching Jannah, beyond anything we achieve or own in this life. He explained i'tisam as holding firmly to Allah for protection, like someone clinging to a rope when their life depends on it. He described that rope as the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. He emphasized that we need to hold on together, supporting one another as a united community. Through the story of Nuh and his son, he urged us to seek protection in Allah and take our children's connection to Islam seriously.
- What is one choice this week that could help us work toward Jannah?
- How could we help each other hold on to the rope of Allah at home?
- When practicing Islam feels difficult, what kind of support would you like from our family?
