Make dua with humility and trust

“When our prayer is not fulfilled in the way that we wanted, we don't say Allah has rejected me.”

The khateeb, at 12:19

In one sentence

Du'a should be a constant practice of humble dependence, gratitude, hope, and trust in Allah's wisdom, modeled on the Prophet's everyday supplications.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Distinguishes salah from the more general, unrestricted practice of du'a.
  2. Explains raised hands as a sign of humility and dependence on Allah.
  3. Presents du'a as the prophets' source of strength while encouraging effort and hope.
  4. Teaches accepting Allah's wisdom when prayers are answered differently than desired.

  6. Encourages gratitude during both good and difficult news, followed by prayers for divine love and oppressed people.
Try this week
Raise your hands in du'a and approach Allah with complete humility and dependence.
Make du'a whenever needed, in any language and without requiring wudu, qibla, or a specific time.
Pair personal goals with sincere effort, then accept that Allah may answer through a different path.
Use the taught supplications at the mirror, when wearing new clothes, entering or leaving the mosque, before sleep, during meals, and at cemeteries.
Before eating, pray for abundance for believing men and women, and let that concern lead to generosity.
Say "Alhamdulillahi 'ala hadhihi 'nna'amah" after good news and "Alhamdulillahi 'ala kulli haad" after sad news.
Ask Allah to make His love dearer than wealth, family, comfort, and personal desire.

For the dinner table

Du'a is a way to stay connected to Allah throughout the entire day, not only during formal prayer. The Prophet modeled humility, gratitude, and trust through supplications for ordinary moments such as eating, dressing, sleeping, and entering the mosque. We should make our efforts while remembering that Allah may guide us toward something better than what we originally wanted. Gratitude should lead us to care for people who have less and to remember Allah during both happiness and sadness. Above all, we should ask Allah to make His love our greatest treasure and to protect those facing oppression.

  1. What is one blessing you can thank Allah for today?
  2. What character trait would you like to improve when you look in the mirror?
  3. How can remembering people who have less change what we do with our food or money?
