Worship is life's permanent purpose
“Worshiping the Creator has nothing to do with what He has to do for you.”
The khutbah argues that recognizing worship as life's permanent purpose reorders work, retirement, family, prayer, and service around Allah.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Accountability before Allah requires understanding why we were created.
- Retirement and free time should become opportunities for worship, not sources of despair.
- Friday prayer and masjid attendance must take priority over business and schedules.
- Work, family care, and ordinary responsibilities become worship through sincere intention.
- Supporting accessible, welcoming masajid helps people fulfill their purpose.
- Remembering mortality helps believers detach from temporary things and seek lasting reward.
- Worship is not a transaction; its worldly taste is peace and tranquility.
In the khateeb's words
“But the purpose behind your existence and mine, you will never retire from it. You will never. You have no option. Even if you want, you can't.”
“What will fulfill you, it's to know the purpose behind your existence, and do it the moment you wake up, till the moment you go to sleep.”
“But I do it, it's part of the worship, because I want Allah to reward me.”
“Worshiping the Creator has nothing to do with what He has to do for you. Because that is why you've been created.”
For the dinner table
Allah created us to worship Him, so our jobs, families, health, and free time can all become part of that worship when our intentions are right. Retirement is not the end of purpose; it can be a chance to serve Allah more freely. We should protect Jumu'ah, help our children pray, and make the masjid easier for people to use. Worship is not a bargain in which we serve Allah only when life goes our way, but a lasting responsibility that brings peace. Remembering that life and its attachments will pass should help us set our priorities with gratitude and compassion for people facing hardship.
- What is one everyday task you could turn into worship by changing your intention?
- How can our family protect prayer time when school, work, or activities get busy?
- What could we do to help someone feel more welcome at the masjid?
