The Quran must be understood and lived
“We will learn 10 ayat from the Qur'an and we will not pass it and go beyond those 10 ayat until we have understood it and put it to application.”
The Quran transforms lives when people sincerely seek its guidance, care for their hearts, understand its meanings, and apply its teachings rather than merely reciting it.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Revisits the gap between reciting the Quran and living according to it.
- Explains that sincere desire for guidance, together with Allah’s will, is necessary for the Quran to benefit a person.
- Emphasizes the living heart as the place where revelation takes effect.
- Argues that understanding, pondering, and applying the Quran must accompany correct recitation.
- Contrasts modern religious priorities with the Companions’ practice of mastering and applying ten verses at a time.
- Calls listeners to reorient their relationship with the Quran to recover their purpose and concern for the afterlife.
In the khateeb's words
“The Quran is not only revealed for you and I to recite and give emphasis and importance to reading it correctly.”
“one of us when we would be learning the Qur'an, we will learn 10 ayat from the Qur'an and we will not pass it and go beyond those 10 ayat until we have understood it and put it to application.”
“So the Qur'an is not, the objective of the Qur'an is not simply reciting it only, but it's to understand it, to ponder and to reflect, to internalize its meanings and its application and put it to action.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah asked why reading and memorizing the Quran do not always lead to changes in our lives. The khateeb reminded us to sincerely want guidance, seek it, and ask Allah to help us. He explained that our hearts need care, including attention to what we watch and hear. Reading correctly matters, but we also need to understand, reflect on, and practice what we learn, whether we are children or adults. He shared how the companions learned ten verses at a time and understood and applied them before moving on. His message was a caring invitation to improve our relationship with Allah’s Book and remember our purpose in this life and the life to come.
