Build your faith beyond the bare minimum
“How can we mold ourselves to fit into deen?”
Muslims should move beyond the bare minimum by deepening their faith, improving the quality of worship, learning Islam from its prophetic foundations, and embodying it through adab and consistent practice.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Uses standards of product quality to explain that deeds, iman, and worship also have levels of quality.
- Distinguishes initial Islam from mature iman marked by certainty, sacrifice, and obedience.
- Explains five levels of salah, emphasizing presence, returning attention when distracted, and finding comfort in prayer.
- Urges listeners to pursue ihsan and excellence rather than loopholes or merely asking what they can get away with.
- Introduces Hadith Jibreel as a concise framework for Islam, iman, ihsan, qadr, and the signs of the Hour.
- Encourages Muslims to explain their faith clearly, return to prophetic roots, and treat AI as a tool rather than a religious foundation.
- Teaches that adab is learned by observing and emulating knowledgeable, practicing elders.
In the khateeb's words
“Intelligence is not learning what you can get away with So stop asking questions about what you can get away with Intelligence is how you build your deen”
“When the question should be the other way around, how can we mold ourselves to fit into deen?”
“if you couldn't benefit from my silence, how are you going to benefit from my words?”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that being Muslim is not only about completing the outer requirements; we should keep growing in sincerity, focus, and excellence. In salah, our minds may wander, but we can gently bring our attention back to Allah. The Hadith of Jibreel gives us a simple map of Islam through Islam, iman, ihsan, belief in qadr, and awareness of the Hereafter. We should learn our faith from the Qur’an, the Prophet, and trustworthy teachers, using modern tools wisely without making them the foundation of belief. We can also learn adab by watching people whose worship and character we respect, then practicing one small improvement together this week.
- What is one way you could bring your attention back during salah this week?
- If a friend asked what Muslims believe, how would you explain it in 30 seconds?
- What good habit or adab have you learned by watching someone you respect?
