Tyranny falls and the oppressed rise
“When you find a story in the Quran, it's definitely not for the purpose of storytelling.”
The story of Musa teaches that tyranny eventually falls and the oppressed are empowered, while believers must respond with steadfast faith, moral formation, truthful advocacy, ethical economic choices, unity, justice, humility, and practical support for Gaza.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Opens with a call to taqwa and preparation for Judgment.
- Uses Surat al-Qasas and Musa’s story to explain tyranny through oppressive authority, military power, and corrupt wealth.
- Applies this framework to Gaza and contemporary political, military, and financial oppression.
- Calls for steadfast faith, spiritual formation, truthful speech, boycotts, family education, unity, and action beyond supplication.
- Reaffirms that tyranny will fall and the oppressed will eventually be empowered, while life remains a test.
- Closes with calls for patience, justice, humility, and support for oppressed people, followed by prayers for Gaza.
In the khateeb's words
“And this triangle, subhanAllah, oppressive politics, blind militarism, and corrupt wealth produces tyranny in every era.”
“we need to be able to raise our children as Muslim Americans who are capable of speaking up of standing for justice”
“supplication by itself isn't sufficient we need to do supplication but we need to work on the ground”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that the stories in the Quran teach lessons for our own lives. Through the story of Musa, the khateeb explained how political oppression, military force, and corrupt wealth can support tyranny, and he connected this to the suffering in Gaza. He reminded us that change can take a long time and called us to remain patient, strengthen our faith, and trust Allah’s promise. He urged us to support oppressed people through truthful speech, thoughtful economic choices, raising children who stand for justice, and staying united. As a family, we can pair our prayers with action and practice justice and humility, even when being fair is difficult.
- What does Musa’s story teach us about continuing to do good when results take time?
- How could we help someone who is being treated unfairly this week?
- What would being fair look like if a close friend or family member did something wrong?
