For the dinner table

Today the imam reminded us that October is Islamic Heritage Month in Canada. He also spoke about how some Islamic schools recently received threats, and said every child should feel safe at school. He told a story from the Quran: a Muslim man stole a shield and blamed a Jewish man, and Allah sent down verses to protect the innocent man, because justice is for everyone whatever their faith. He said one of the best gifts Muslims can give our country is strong, loving families: caring for our parents and elders at home, staying close to relatives, and looking after our neighbors and even their neighbors. He said that taking care of our family with patience is worship, just like praying at the masjid. He asked us to tell our children about Heritage Month and to show people the good that Islam brings.

  1. Did you know October is Islamic Heritage Month? What is one Muslim contribution you could share with your class?
  2. Why do you think Allah defended the Jewish man in the story of the stolen shield?
