The Quran teaches a path to true happiness

“It does not bring misery. It brings you closer to Allah azza wa jal.”

The khateeb, at 16:29

In one sentence

The Quran was not revealed to make people miserable; it teaches concrete means, dutifulness to parents, persistent dua, and closeness to the Quran, by which a believer finds true happiness and avoids misery in this life and the next.

The khutbah in 5 steps

  1. Intro: pursuit of true happiness and avoidance of misery as framed by the Quran
  2. First means: dutifulness and humility toward parents, from the example of Yahya and Surah al-Isra's 'wing of humility'
  3. Second means: dua, Zakariya's example of never being disappointed when calling on Allah
  4. Third means: staying close to the Quran, which was not sent to cause misery, and dhikr that brings tranquility
  5. Following the message brings hardship, not misery, Rib'i ibn Amir's answer to Rustam
Try this week
Be dutiful and humble toward your parents, even if they were imperfect, treating it as worship that benefits you, and 'try it' and observe the result
Do not obey parents in anything that conflicts with what Allah commanded, while still remaining kind and mindful of them
Make dua regularly, unburdening all your problems to Allah with certainty He hears, and leave the timing of the answer to Him even if it takes years
Turn to reciting the Quran with the intention of relieving distress whenever you feel miserable or afraid
Give in the way of Allah as a means of avoiding misery (from the corrupted closing section)

For the dinner table

The khateeb taught that everyone wants happiness and wants to avoid misery, and the Quran itself shows us how. First, he reminded us to be beautiful and humble toward our parents, even if they were not perfect parents, because Allah commanded it, and doing so lifts our own troubles. Second, he told us about Prophet Zakariya, who poured out his weakness to Allah and was never disappointed, reminding us that Allah wants us to bring every worry to Him in dua, even if the answer takes years. Third, he said Allah did not send the Quran to make us miserable, following it may be hard sometimes, but it brings peace and closeness to Allah, not misery. The big message: real happiness comes from obeying Allah, being kind to our parents, talking to Allah, and staying close to the Quran.

  1. What is one nice thing you could do for your mom or dad this week, just because Allah asked you to?
  2. If you could tell Allah about one thing that's been bothering you, what would you ask Him for?
  3. The khateeb said the Quran was sent to make us happy, not miserable, what's one thing in the deen that actually makes you feel good?
