Make faith your heart's deepest love
“The best beloved a man has is that which enters the grave with him and offers him solace therein.”
Believers should deliberately make pious deeds and love of Allah, His Messenger, and the faith their heart's primary loves, expressing that love through worship, cheerful charity, study, and detachment from competing attachments.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames Jumu'ah as weekly renewal after Dhul-Hijjah, with routine revealing spiritual attachments.
- Uses Hatim al-Asam's story to teach protecting others from embarrassment and overlooking shortcomings.
- Presents pious works as beloved companions into the grave, defining love through time, longing, and joy.
- Connects the sweetness of faith to tawhid, prayer, cheerful zakat, contentment, and love for Allah and His Messenger.
- Warns that competing loves can crowd out devotion, using Abu Talib and Surah al-Ahzab as examples.
- Closes with prayers for faith, oppressed communities, and congregational prayer.
In the khateeb's words
“So I reflected and said, the best beloved a man has is that which enters the grave with him and offers him solace therein.”
“Charitable giving is not something that we should do with resentment.”
For the dinner table
Jumu'ah is a weekly chance to renew our relationship with Allah, especially when ordinary routines reveal what we truly care about. The story of Hatim al-Asam reminds us to protect people's dignity and overlook their embarrassing moments. The khutbah encourages us to make good deeds beloved by giving them real time, finding joy in prayer, and treating worship as comfort rather than mere obligation. Faith becomes sweet when we worship Allah alone, give charity cheerfully, and feel content with Allah, Islam, and Prophet Muhammad. Because the heart has limited room, we should notice competing loves and deliberately deepen our love for Allah, His Messenger, and righteous believers.
- What good deed helps you feel closest to Allah?
- What is one act of worship you could make more time for this week?
- Who is someone you love for Allah's sake, and how can you show it?
