Keep Muslim hearts united despite differences
“Regardless of all these differences our hearts need to remain connected our hearts need to remain united.”
Though Muslims differ in culture, background, and opinions, they must keep their hearts united around core Islamic principles by caring for others, avoiding exclusion, and understanding one another within the community.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Urges Muslims to strengthen existing community institutions rather than abandoning them for separate projects.
- Explains that cultural, tribal, linguistic, and personal differences are part of Allah's design, while core beliefs unite Muslims.
- Identifies concern for believers everywhere as a sign of genuinely connected hearts.
- Advises against exiling people over sins, shortcomings, or differing conclusions when intentions and goals remain sound.
- Calls listeners to understand others' perspectives, correct mistakes constructively, and move forward together.
- Closes with prayers for unity and suffering communities, followed by an ICD event announcement and prayer recitations.
In the khateeb's words
“I work within this framework that Allah and His messenger has set for me”
“regardless of all these differences our hearts need to remain connected our hearts need to remain united”
“none of you will achieve complete iman and complete faith until you love for your brother or for your sister which you love for yourself”
For the dinner table
Our differences in culture, language, appearance, and opinions are part of Allah's wisdom, not a reason to break apart. What matters is keeping our hearts united around faith in Allah and His Messenger, the Qur'an, and the oneness of Allah. The speaker says this unity appears when we care about Muslims beyond our own group, do not cast people out over a mistake or difference, and try to understand their point of view. We should correct one another with good intentions and then move forward together. The khutbah also reminds us to pray for people facing suffering around the world and to strengthen the communities we already share.
- How can we show care for people who are different from us?
- What should we do after someone makes a mistake?
- How can we listen better when we disagree?
