Respond to oppression with mercy and purpose
“The oppressor wants you to react in a way that justifies his oppression.”
In a hostile world, Muslims should respond to Allah’s call rather than oppression, preserving purpose, unity, mercy, character, and steadfastness.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Begins by emphasizing taqwa and Allah’s guidance.
- Frames contemporary hostility through the Prophet’s persecution in Mecca and Ta’if.
- Teaches responding to Allah’s call rather than allowing oppressors to dictate one’s reaction.
- Calls for brotherhood, unity, trust in Allah, and resistance to sectarian division.
- Warns that social-media algorithms amplify provocation and communal fragmentation.
- Uses the Prophet’s mercy, Ashura, and Karbala to teach steadfastness and moral resolve.
In the khateeb's words
“the oppressor wants you to react in a way that justifies his oppression”
“the reaction of mercy alayhi wasallatu wasallam and the reaction of foresight a reaction that is not defined by the hostilities”
“the biggest weakness in the Ummah today is you know what? disunity”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that the Prophet faced terrible hostility but stayed guided by Allah’s call. His response showed mercy, a sense of purpose, and care for what future generations might become. The khutbah also emphasized companionship, describing how Abu Bakr helped free people who were enslaved and suffering. It warned that provocative social media content can deepen division among Muslims. We were encouraged to trust Allah, support one another, and hold firmly to our principles and good character when life is difficult.
- What could help you respond with kindness and courage when someone treats you unfairly?
- Who could our family support this week, and what could we do for them?
- How do you feel after scrolling online, and what helps you choose when to stop?
