Do good even in dark times
“The Muslim is never complacent; the Muslim never accepts the status quo.”
In one sentence
In times of deception and moral darkness, Muslims must preserve truth, faith, family ties, Qur’an-centered living, and principled action without waiting for immediate results.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces prophetic warnings about deceptive times, misplaced trust, and unqualified people speaking on public affairs.
- Urges believers to rush toward good deeds and remain active even when progress seems impossible.
- Explains signs of societal decline, including broken kinship ties, superficial Qur’an listening, and oppressive authority.
- Critiques Thanksgiving and Black Friday as examples of distorted values and excessive consumerism.
- Calls listeners to become unnoticed sources of light by changing themselves, their families, and their communities.
- Closes with prayers and announcements for Qur’an study, community programs, and a lawful protest for Palestine-related awareness.
Try this week
Rush toward good deeds instead of waiting for ideal conditions or immediate results.
Maintain ties of kinship.
Reflect on the Qur’an and apply its guidance rather than merely listening.
Resist consumerism by making Thanksgiving and Black Friday different and avoiding unnecessary purchases.
If available, attend the announced 4 p.m. protest at Grand Army Plaza; travel in groups, stay aware, obey laws and protocols, and voice opposition to current policies.
Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“the Muslim is never complacent the Muslim never accepts the status quo and says well what can I do”
“the Muslim is always progressive is always doing what they can placing what is in their hands to the best of their ability and is not daunted when they don't see immediate progress”
“it is my job to be a glimmer of light in this overwhelming darkness it is my job to resist by whatever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala placed in my ability to change myself and my family and my community”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that difficult times can confuse people about what is true and trustworthy. The speaker encouraged Muslims to keep doing good, maintain family ties, and reflect on the Qur’an instead of only listening to it. He also warned us not to let shopping, possessions, or social customs replace our principles and concern for people who are suffering. Each of us can bring light by improving ourselves, helping our families, and serving our community, even when change takes time.
- What is one good deed we can do this week without waiting for perfect conditions?
- How can our family show gratitude without buying things we do not need?
- What does being a “glimmer of light” look like in our community?
