Make dua to Allah alone

“How can we not then make dua to Allah?”

The khateeb, at 0:38

In one sentence

Dua is an act of tawhid and humble servanthood, so Muslims should ask Allah alone for goodness in this life and the next while trusting His wisdom.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Grounds dua in recognizing that every blessing and possession comes from Allah.
  2. Explains tawhid as calling upon Allah alone rather than prophets or other people.
  3. Describes approaching Allah with humility, dependence, and trust, with or without wudu.
  4. Uses prophetic guidance to teach asking for goodness in this life, the hereafter, and the highest level of Jannah.
  5. Explains that sincere, lawful dua is answered through one of three forms.
  6. Illustrates the power of dua through Musa, Ayyub, and Ibrahim and calls listeners to practice these lessons.

For the dinner table

Today’s khutbah reminded us that our health, family, and everything we have are blessings from Allah. The khateeb explained that dua means calling upon Allah alone, with humility and confidence in His generosity. We can make dua throughout the day, even while walking or resting. He encouraged us to ask for goodness in this life and the hereafter, and for protection from hellfire. When we do not receive exactly what we ask for, we can keep trusting Allah’s wisdom: the khateeb explained that Allah may grant our request, save its reward for the hereafter, or turn away harm.

  1. What is one blessing you would like to thank Allah for today?
  2. When during your usual day could you pause to make dua?
  3. What good would you like to ask Allah for, both for yourself and for someone else?
