Serving society is a path to leadership
“If you will serve people, leadership will come your way.”
Muslims should deepen their faith through Quranic knowledge and embody prophetic leadership by serving society through honest public involvement.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- Quranic learning strengthens iman, and believers should ask Allah to increase them in knowledge.
- Divine knowledge nourishes the soul and leads to success in this life and the hereafter.
- The Prophet’s service in Medina, feeding people, spreading peace, and helping neighbors, illustrates how service earns trust and leadership.
- Muslims should view politics as khidmat, or service, and participate honestly regardless of party affiliation.
- The khutbah closes by urging civic engagement and illustrating the argument with a reference to Mamdani.
In the khateeb's words
“Because there is no end to knowledge. There is no end to knowledge.”
“If you will serve people, leadership will come your way. If you don't serve people, leadership will not come your way.”
For the dinner table
Imam Tariq reminded us that learning from the Quran can strengthen our iman and bring us closer to Allah. He encouraged us to keep asking Allah for more knowledge and to keep learning throughout our lives. He used Ramadan to explain how working on our spiritual lives can help us grow closer to Allah. Drawing on his account of the Prophet’s example, he emphasized feeding people, spreading peace, visiting the sick, and helping others. A lesson we can bring home is to make learning a regular habit and put what we learn into practice through sincere service.
- What is one thing about the Quran you would like us to learn together?
- When have you felt especially close to Allah?
- Whose day could we make easier this week, and how?
