Death & the hereafterFrom the masjid's own video, Sep 19, 2026.
Compete for Jannah, not worldly status
“If you want to compete, compete in things that will get you to Jannah.”
In one sentence
Lasting happiness comes not from upgrading and comparing in this temporary dunya but from remembering Allah, pursuing Jannah, and competing in righteous deeds.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Uses differences in luxury standards to show why worldly upgrades never satisfy.
- Contrasts the Prophet's modest life with worldly rulers and frames dunya as a temporary hotel.
- Identifies security, health, and daily food as immense blessings.
- Presents dhikr, righteousness, and Jannah as the source of true happiness.
- Redirects competition from wealth and status toward Qur'an, charity, worship, and spiritual growth.
- Closes with prayers and community announcements about civic participation and community programs.

Quotes
In the khateeb's words
“And so why are you working so hard? Why are you upgrading your hotel room when you're going to leave in a couple of days with all these things when this is not your permanent abode?”
“If you want to compete, compete in things that will get you to Jannah, right?”
“But then when it comes to our deen, we are completely fine with our baseline and where we're at, and we don't like to compete when it comes to our deen.”
“If you want to be content, if you want to be truly happy, that's the only way you're going to find that is in Jannah.”
Talk about it at home
For the dinner table
The khutbah reminded us that worldly life is temporary, like a hotel room we will soon leave. The Prophet taught that safety, health, and enough food for one day are tremendous blessings. Remembering Allah and pursuing righteousness are what bring lasting contentment. Instead of comparing homes, jobs, and possessions, we can help one another grow in Qur'an, worship, charity, and other good deeds. The announcements also encouraged civic participation through the candidate forum and voter registration.
- What is one blessing you sometimes overlook?
- Who helps you become better in your faith?
- What is a good deed you would like to compete in this week?
