Sulayman’s dua teaches grateful humility
Prophet Sulayman's supplication teaches Muslims to recognize Allah's blessings, seek ability to perform deeds pleasing to Him, and humbly rely on His mercy.
The khutbah in 5 steps
- The opening welcomes visitors and asks the congregation to pray for sick members, volunteers, and students.
- The khateeb turns to Prophet Sulayman's response to something pleasant or amazing: immediate supplication.
- He explains the supplication as asking Allah to engage the whole self in gratitude for His blessings, including blessings received through one's parents.
- He emphasizes that Allah, not changing social norms, defines what is truly righteous.
- He explains the closing request for Allah's mercy among His righteous servants as a lesson in humility, servant identity, and comprehensive gratitude across past, present, and future.
In the khateeb's words
“The Qur'an is not sent just merely for you to read it. Memorize it. It's actually sent in order for you to think about it. To do.”
“The recognition that all blessings come from who? Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.”
“who defines what is righteous? Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala not us we don't define what is good and righteous”
“he views himself as a servant of Allah nothing more nothing less servant of Allah”
For the dinner table
The khutbah reflected on Prophet Suleiman’s beautiful supplication after encountering something good. He asked Allah to engage his whole being in gratitude, helping him thank Allah for the blessings given to him and his parents. He also asked for help doing righteous deeds that please Allah, reminding us that Allah defines what is truly good. Prophet Suleiman then asked to be admitted by Allah’s mercy among His righteous servants, showing humility despite being a prophet and king. His supplication brings together gratitude for the past, righteous action in the present, and hope in Allah’s mercy for the future.
- What is one blessing Allah gave you through your parents or caregivers?
- How could you use your hands, words, or time to thank Allah this week?
- What helps you decide whether an action is truly good and pleasing to Allah?
