The Hijra calls masajid to serve communities

“Try to understand what was that Hijra all about.”

The khateeb, at 4:46

In one sentence

The khutbah argues that Muslims in America should learn from the Prophet’s Hijra by making masajid centers of taqwa, worship, cross-cultural brotherhood, community problem-solving, and neighborly engagement.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Uses the Prophet’s Hijra from Mecca to Medina as a framework for asking what Muslim immigrants and communities should accomplish today.
  2. Identifies Medina’s three goals: establish the masjid, unite Muhajirin and Ansar as a brotherhood, and relate wisely to non-Muslim neighbors and People of the Book.
  3. Argues that masajid must be founded on taqwa from the first day, not treated primarily as financial or organizational projects.
  4. Expands the masjid’s mission to spiritual purification, family and marital mediation, and practical help for people in distress.
  5. Uses Surah al-Nur to call for continual remembrance, established prayer, and zakat without allowing business or study to distract worship.
  6. Closes with prayers for Muslims, Palestine, and Gaza.

For the dinner table

The khutbah asks us to learn from the Prophet’s Hijra and apply its lessons to Muslim life today. A strong community needs masajid rooted in taqwa, sincere worship, and remembrance of Allah. It also needs real brotherhood across differences of language, ethnicity, and background. The masjid should help people with family and community problems, not only host prayers. We should protect our daily prayers, serve those in need, and treat our neighbors with kindness.

  1. What could our family do to strengthen brotherhood and sisterhood in our community?
  2. How can a mosque become more helpful to families facing difficulties?
  3. What helps us keep praying when school, work, or activities become busy?
