Unity grows through diversity and service
“The strength of this community lies precisely in its diversity and inclusive effort.”
Muslim unity should embrace diversity and express itself through worship, learning, excellent character, and service so that beneficial good endures.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces unity, strength, and service within the diversity of God's creation.
- Uses Quranic passages to frame human diversity as divine design and a call to recognize one another and compete in good deeds.
- Applies this vision to the diverse, inclusive Muslim community in Los Angeles and its connection to Islamic heritage and contemporary Western life.
- Illustrates communal justice through Umar ibn al-Khattab's support for an elderly Jewish man, then urges worship, education, service, and welcoming newcomers.
- Presents ihsan through avoiding disputes, refraining from lying, and perfecting character.
- Concludes that beneficial good endures while harmful corruption disappears, followed by a prayer for forgiveness and mercy.
In the khateeb's words
“The strength of this community lies precisely in its diversity and inclusive effort. Islam unites, does not divide.”
“Our community grows stronger as we deepen our faith through worship, education, and service.”
“Islam does not enter the heart by force. It enters softly. Faith cannot be imposed.”
“What becomes corrupt and harmful ultimately has no value, because it brings no good and eventually disappears.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah reminded us that Allah created people with different languages, colors, and backgrounds so we can know one another, not look down on one another. Our Muslim community becomes strong when we worship, learn, serve, welcome newcomers, and treat neighbors with justice. The story of Umar helping an elderly Jewish man shows that caring for vulnerable people is part of faith. The khateeb encouraged us to avoid arguments and lies and to build excellent character. In the end, the good we do for Allah and for people is what lasts.
- How can our family help someone who feels new or left out?
- What good deed could we do this week that might continue helping people?
- How can we disagree without turning a conversation into a fight?
