Gaza tests whether we keep our humanity
“We lose our humanity the moment that the thought of it no longer bothers us.”
The khutbah argues that Gaza demonstrates steadfast faith and preserved humanity, calling believers to protect their moral conscience through advocacy, prayer, relief, and educating the next generation.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines losing humanity as becoming unbothered by killing, theft, and harm, then condemns Gaza’s dehumanization.
- Praises Gazans’ faith, patience, dignity, and endurance amid destruction and displacement.
- Uses Qur’an 5:54 to call for loving, God-conscious people to replace those who abandon the believers.
- Frames the community’s test as advocacy, prayer, relief work, and assistance for Gaza and the wider ummah.
- Draws on Fatimah’s hardships and the Prophet’s Year of Grief to teach that faith can perceive ease within hardship.
- Closes with a Nasruddin story, communal supplications, and announcements for Sunday school registration.
In the khateeb's words
“We don't lose our humanity the moment... that someone kills, the moment that someone steals, the moment that someone hurts another. We lose our humanity the moment that the thought of it no longer bothers us.”
“But my dear brothers and sisters, have we passed our test? What is our test? Ours is to use our tongues to advocate for them, to pray for them.”
“They have lost everything. And they say, I'm satisfied with Allah's decree.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah called us to keep our hearts sensitive to suffering and to care for the people of Gaza. The khateeb described their faith, patience, and trust in Allah through terrible loss as lessons for us. He reminded us that our responsibilities include praying, speaking up, and sending assistance, and he shared how two community organizations had worked together to provide food. He encouraged us to bring relief to someone else's grief, even when we have sadness of our own. Through the Prophet's example, he reminded us to keep helping others through hardship and to look for the ease Allah sends alongside difficulty.
- What is one kind thing you could do for someone who is having a hard day?
- What would you like to ask Allah for when we make dua for the people of Gaza?
- How could our family work together to help people who need food?
