Obedience to Allah is the greatest investment
“Any good thing you do, you are making an investment.”
Because Allah’s commands are a mercy and every act of obedience is an investment whose reward is guaranteed, Muslims should embrace Islamic responsibilities and consistently pursue worship and charity even when difficult.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Describes the social and workplace pressures Muslims may face practicing Islam in the West.
- Explains Islamic commands and prohibitions as acts of mercy, illustrated through the scissors analogy.
- Emphasizes Allah’s superior knowledge and the protective purpose of obedience.
- Presents worship and good deeds as investments with guaranteed reward from Allah.
- Connects Quran recitation, regular prayer, and charitable spending with everlasting profit.
- Encourages difficult acts such as qiyam al-layl and supplication for increased strength.
In the khateeb's words
“But when we are going through all this, something should come to our mind. That if Allah has told me not to do anything, it is as a result of His mercy.”
“When you do a business with Allah, that is nothing but the best and the greatest investment you can ever do.”
“anything Allah asks me to do, I know that is in my best interest, and I will try all my best to do it.”
“Because any good thing you do, you are making an investment. Not ordinary investment, the best investment for that matter.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that practicing Islam can feel difficult when people around us make different choices. He explained that Allah’s guidance comes from mercy and is for our good, even when we do not understand it fully. Like an adult protecting a child from sharp scissors, Allah knows dangers we may not see. Reading Quran, praying, giving from what we have, and doing good are investments whose reward with Allah will not be lost. When a good deed feels hard, we can keep trying and ask Allah to make it easier.
- What is one small good deed you could make part of your day?
- How could we help each other when praying or reading Quran feels difficult?
- What did the example of the child with scissors help you understand about Allah’s guidance?
