Use your presence in America for good
“You will bear the discomfort in order to stand up for what is right.”
Muslims in America should see their presence as a responsibility from Allah to practice Islam openly, benefit humanity, stand for what is right, and use their resources to help those in need.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- The sermon frames Muslims’ presence in America as purposeful and divinely appointed.
- The ummah’s responsibility is to benefit humanity, command good, and oppose wrongdoing.
- Khadijah’s description of the Prophet illustrates service, courage, generosity, and moral steadfastness.
- Helping people through concrete needs can be among the deeds most beloved to Allah.
- Muslim wealth and privilege carry responsibilities beyond obligatory charity.
- The suffering in Gaza provides a current opportunity to support others through charitable action.
- The sermon closes by asking Allah to direct believers’ wealth and lives toward His purposes.
In the khateeb's words
“you will bear the discomfort in order to stand up for what is right.”
“Walk with them until that need is fulfilled. Know that my walking with my brother for a need of his is more beloved to me than spending a month in seclusion in this place.”
“So Allah has given us a purpose, Allah has given us resources, And we are tasked with making sure that we remind ourselves what all of this is for.”
For the dinner table
The khateeb said Muslims in America should see their presence as a responsibility from Allah, not an accident. Our faith should make us useful to people by preserving family ties, helping the weak, speaking up for what is right, and walking with people through their needs. He reminded us that wealth is entrusted to us, so charity should go beyond minimum obligations when people are suffering. He connected this responsibility to supporting people in Gaza and asked Allah to help us use our lives and resources for good.
- When is it hard to stand up for what is right?
- How can our family use its resources to help others?
