Istikharah means research, prayer, and trust
“Consult with others, make a decision, and then put your trust in Allah.”
Istikharah is a disciplined way to seek Allah’s guidance in difficult decisions: research and consult first, choose a direction, pray, and then trust and accept His decree.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Introduces regret and anxiety, then presents istikharah as a remedy for both.
- Explains the hadith-based dua, its translation, and its request for guidance, ease, protection, and contentment.
- Connects answered supplication to Quranic promises and warns against letting desire or arrogance block istikharah.
- Teaches a decision process: use reason, research, consult others, decide, pray two voluntary rakahs, and make the dua.
- Corrects the idea that istikharah requires dreams or supernatural signs and sets limits for obligatory, recommended, forbidden, or disliked acts.
- Shares a car-repair and Hajj story to encourage trust in Allah when solutions seem impossible.
- Closes with Surah at-Talaq 65:3 and a reminder that Allah provides from unexpected sources.
In the khateeb's words
“Ultimately, in this dua of istakata, we are asking Allah for His guidance and for His help.”
“Consult with others, make a decision, and then put your trust in Allah.”
“Notice now within this formula, there's no mention of waiting for a dream or waiting for a sign from heaven or some sort of sign to guide you to the right decision.”
“Trust in Allah, and make your istikharah, make dua to Allah, no matter how difficult, no matter how tight, no matter how unreasonable the situation may be, and trust in Allah.”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reminded us that regret about the past and worry about the future are feelings many people face. The khateeb explained istikharah as asking Allah to make what is good possible, turn what is harmful away, and help us be content with His decree. He encouraged us to research our choices, seek advice, make a decision, and offer two voluntary units of prayer followed by the dua. He emphasized that we do not need to wait for a dream or a special sign before moving forward with trust in Allah. He also shared how a community helped when his car broke down and threatened his plans for Hajj, encouraging us to trust Allah even when we cannot see a way out.
- What is one decision you would like help thinking through this week?
- Who helps you see things differently when you need advice?
- What could our family do for someone whose plans suddenly go wrong?
