True freedom means worship without barriers

“Freedom, for us, is that we should be able to practice our religion without any barrier whatsoever.”

The khateeb, at 14:19

In one sentence

True freedom in Islam is the liberty to worship Allah and follow the religion without obstruction while living peacefully with others, and American Muslims must use that freedom to become exemplary servants of their neighbors and society.

For the dinner table

Allah created people from different nations and tribes so they could know one another, not feel superior to one another; true honor comes from taqwa. The khutbah acknowledged the painful history behind the United States, including the suffering of Native Americans and enslaved Africans. Muslims are grateful for the freedom to worship, pray, fast, give zakah, and live by Islam. That freedom also brings responsibilities: we should support our neighbors, improve our communities, and be dependable Muslims, students, workers, and family members. Our children can be confident in their Muslim identity without becoming proud or looking down on anyone.

  1. What is one way our family can help or improve the lives of our neighbors?
  2. How can you show confidence in being Muslim without feeling superior to others?
  3. What responsibility comes with a freedom or opportunity you enjoy?
