Masjids build community across social boundaries
“Break these boundaries and teach one another.”
A masjid is more than a building: it is an egalitarian spiritual and social hub where people leave ego and status behind, connect across differences, teach one another, and support communal needs.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Defines the masjid as Allah’s house, where humility and equality replace status.
- Explains spiritual maintenance through faith, prayer, zakat, and leaving ego outside.
- Connects masjid community-building with recognizing needs and sharing zakat.
- Uses Masjid al-Nabawi, Darussufah, and women’s teaching to show the masjid’s social and educational role.
- Calls elders and youngsters to cross generational boundaries and learn from one another, illustrated by Usama’s leadership.
- Requests support for the renovation of the Islamic Society of Rancho Cordova’s masjid.
In the khateeb's words
“We do not look at status, we do not look at wealth, we do not look at fame.”
“The Masajid are just beyond walls. They are not here as a structure. This is our spiritual realm in Islam.”
“The Masjid was an education center. Aisha RadhiAllahu Wa Ta'ala Anha used to teach there also.”
“Break these boundaries and teach one another. This is the Ummah.”
For the dinner table
The masjid is Allah’s house, so everyone should enter with humility and leave status, wealth, fame, and ego at the door. It is more than walls: it is a place where people pray, form bonds, notice who needs help, and share zakat. The Prophet’s masjid also served as a center for judgment, education, and care for the poor, with women and men contributing. Our community grows when elders and young people teach and listen to one another across their differences. This week, we can greet someone new, build a relationship, support a need, and help our masjid serve people well.
- Who could you welcome or sit beside at the masjid this week?
- What is one thing an elder and a young person could teach each other?
- How can our family help someone or help our masjid?
