Recall Allah's blessings when making dua
“A servant remembers Allah's past kindness and asks Allah to continue His kindness.”
Dua is the believer's greatest weapon, and one of the best ways to make it accepted is tawassul, recalling Allah's past kindness and actions toward you, then asking Him to continue His blessings with hope and good thoughts of Him.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Opening: dua is worship and the weapon of the believer, showing weakness and reliance on Allah
- Introduction of tawassul through Allah's actions and past blessings as a means to acceptance
- Prophet Ibrahim's dua, listing Allah's favors (creation, guidance, sustenance, healing) before asking
- Prophet Musa's dua at the well, recalling past goodness while declaring present need
- The believers' duas in Surah Ali Imran, asking for firmness on guidance and protection from the Fire
- Prophet Zakariya's dua for a child, hope in Allah's limitless provision despite apparent impossibility
- The Prophet Muhammad's duas, beauty of character, not leaving oneself for a blink of an eye
In the khateeb's words
“A servant remembers Allah's past kindness and asks Allah to continue His kindness.”
“We need Allah not only to guide us once, but to keep our hearts firm until the end of our lives.”
“A believer should not only ask for outward beauty, healthy, and worldly blessings only. He should also ask Allah for inner beauty, good manners, sincerity, humility, and clean heart.”
“Many people become annoyed if we ask them too much. But Allah loves when His servants ask Him again and again.”
For the dinner table
This khutbah taught that dua is the believer's greatest weapon, because it shows our weakness and our complete trust in Allah. The khateeb explained a beautiful way to make dua called tawassul: first remember the blessings Allah has already given you, then ask Him for what you need. He showed how Prophet Ibrahim, Prophet Musa, the believers in the Quran, and Prophet Zakariya all made dua this way, recalling Allah's past kindness and asking Him to continue it. Unlike people, who get tired of being asked, Allah loves when His servants ask again and again. So the khateeb encouraged everyone to think well of Allah, ask for firmness upon guidance, and pray for good character, not just worldly things.
- What is one blessing Allah gave you before that you can mention in your dua tonight?
- Why do you think Allah loves being asked over and over when people get annoyed by it?
- If you could ask Allah for one inner quality, like patience or sincerity, which would you pick?
