Daily remembrance renews our righteousness
“What Allah really needs from you and I is that our hearts submit to Him and that our hearts want Him.”
The Prophet's loving counsel to Mu'adh shows that lasting righteousness grows from dependence on Allah, consistent remembrance, foundational faith, merciful teaching, just leadership, and excellent character.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Calls believers to taqwa and frames the khutbah around the Prophet's final years.
- Recounts the Prophet's emotional farewell and appointment of young Mu'adh ibn Jabal to Yemen.
- Explains guidance on dua, repentance, judgment, gradual teaching, zakat, justice, and character.
- Uses the tasbih of Fatimah and Aisha's dhikr to show remembrance as spiritual renewal.
- Distinguishes gifted and cultivated virtues, emphasizing Allah's help in developing righteousness.
- Develops prophetic mercy: make religion easy, offer hope, prioritize belief, and avoid oppression or excess.
- Closes with prayers for steadfastness, oppressed communities, and an injured congregant before salah.
In the khateeb's words
“Never let yourself finish a Salah, except you say after the Salah, Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husna ibadatik.”
“And give them glad tidings and do not strike fear into them.”
“what Allah really needs from you and I is that our hearts submit to Him and that our hearts want Him.”
“You did a mistake. You're coming with a repentant heart. Let's make this right with Allah.”
For the dinner table
Today's khutbah focused on the Prophet Muhammad's loving farewell to Mu'adh ibn Jabal as he sent him to teach and judge in Yemen. The Prophet taught him to keep Allah in his heart, ask for help after every prayer, repair sins with good deeds, and treat people with excellent character. He also taught Mu'adh to make faith and religion easy to approach, give hope, unite people, and avoid burdening them or taking advantage of them. The khutbah reminded us that some good qualities come naturally while others grow through effort and Allah's help. At home, we can practice this by keeping a daily dhikr routine and making our words and actions gentler toward others.
- What is one dhikr or prayer that helps you feel closer to Allah?
- How can we make things easier and more hopeful for someone this week?
- Which character quality would you like to practice with Allah's help?
