Hardship should transform the heart

“Don't allow a hardship to leave your life before it leaves a mark on your heart.”

The khateeb, at 30:44

In one sentence

Blessings and hardships are tests of the heart, and their true purpose is to deepen gratitude, trust, and return to Allah.

The khutbah in 6 steps

  1. Distinguishes Allah’s pleasure from receiving blessings or suffering hardship.
  2. Explains how familiarity makes blessings invisible and weakens gratitude.
  3. Uses Musa, Bani Israel, and Fir'aun to contrast transformed and hardened hearts.
  4. Shows that miracles and trials matter only when they change a person.
  5. Urges listeners to remember blessings and seek transformation through hardship.
  6. Closes by asking what Allah saved them for, not merely what He saved them from.
Try this week
Notice and name everyday blessings before they become invisible.
Say Alhamdulillah consciously for blessings while they are present.
Ask Allah to transform you through hardship, not only to remove it.
Reflect on what Allah saved you for and what faithful action should follow.

For the dinner table

The khutbah teaches that blessings and hardships are both tests of the heart. We can become so used to health, safety, family, prayer, and the Quran that we stop noticing them, while fear can make us forget how Allah has carried us. The story of Musa shows that being rescued is not the same as being guided: the real goal is a heart that trusts Allah and changes after the trial. This week, we should name our blessings, say Alhamdulillah, and ask Allah to make every difficulty bring us closer to Him.

  1. What is one everyday blessing you would miss most if it disappeared?
  2. What can a hard experience teach your heart?
  3. How can our family show gratitude for Allah’s blessings this week?
