Renew your purpose in the new Hijri year
“Prepare a plan for yourself, for your family, for your community.”
The new Hijri year should renew Muslims’ purpose through peace, service, worship, learning, practical planning, reliance on Allah, and resilient community-building.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Frames the new Hijri year through the Quran’s teaching about twelve months and four sacred months.
- Acknowledges Gaza’s suffering and job-market disruption caused by artificial intelligence.
- Explains Muharram, Ashura, gratitude, and the importance of hadith for understanding Quranic guidance.
- Presents the Medina principles of spreading peace, feeding people, treating relatives kindly, and praying at night.
- Applies a five-step plan: become strong, pursue beneficial work, seek Allah’s help, reject despair, and accept divine decree.
- Calls listeners to make concrete plans for themselves, their families, and their community while repeatedly getting back up after setbacks.
In the khateeb's words
“If nothing else we can do this year, each one of us, seriously, we don't have to wait for organizations, massages to feed people.”
“The message of Islam is not for Muslims only. We are not an exclusive club. We are in the United States of America. Our message is for all.”
“Prepare a plan for yourself, for your family, for your community. Because as I said, we need to stand tall on our own feet.”
“But you get up again. You get up again, you keep getting up again, getting up again, inshallah, you will see, that the doors of opportunities will continue to open for you.”
For the dinner table
The khutbah invites us to treat the new Hijri year as a chance to become new people together. The speaker reminds us to spread peace, feed others, care for our relatives, and strengthen our worship through the daily prayers and night prayer. He also says Muslims should keep learning and working hard as artificial intelligence changes the job market. We should ask Allah for help without giving up, and make practical plans for ourselves, our families, and our communities. When plans fail, we should get back up and keep moving toward better opportunities.
- Who could we share a meal with this week?
- What is one peaceful action we can take with a neighbor or classmate?
- What new skill would you like to learn this year?
