Future generations need a united community
“Let's not let these little things divide us.”
Because life is fragile and earlier generations sacrificed to build the Muslim community, Muslims should forgive one another, overcome racial and ethnic divisions, and unite around long-term plans serving future generations.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Reflects on life's fragility and urges forgiveness, compassion, and resolving grudges.
- Celebrates the masjid's history, pioneers, and sacrifices that sustained the community.
- Calls the diverse Muslim community to adapt institutions to changing needs.
- Describes future plans for a community center, school, feeding programs, technology, arts, and theater.
- Urges Muslims to prioritize children and grandchildren over petty disagreements.
- Calls for personal repentance and removal of racism, classism, and ethnic prejudice.
- Closes with prayers, donation requests, and announcements for upcoming programs.
In the khateeb's words
“When the makeup of your community changes, the needs of your community change. And then you have to begin to adjust.”
“Let's save our children. Let's save our grandchildren. Let's focus on the big picture. Let's not let these little things divide us.”
“But we have to do our part. For Allah will never change the condition of the people until they change that which is in them own self.”
“Go home, identify your own challenges and what's preventing you from hugging, embracing, and loving your fellow Muslim brother and sister.”
For the dinner table
Imam Wazir Ali reminded us that life is precious and can change quickly, so we should make time for forgiveness and compassion. He thanked the pioneers whose sacrifices helped build the masjid and encouraged us to appreciate what we have inherited. As the community grows more diverse, he said we need to listen and respond to everyone's needs. He described hopes for education, feeding programs, technology, and wholesome arts that could help future generations thrive. He urged us to work together, plan ahead, and begin with our own hearts by addressing prejudice and the small disagreements that divide us.
- What is one kind step you could take to repair a disagreement this week?
- Who helped build or care for our community, and how could we thank them?
- If you could help create a program at a community center, what would it be and whom would it help?
