True worship should shape your next deeds
“If you want to see if your ibadah was accepted, then see what happens afterwards.”
The khutbah urges believers to avoid heedlessness by maintaining the Quran, prayer, righteous companionship, remembrance of death, humility, steadfastness, and ethical conduct.
The khutbah in 7 steps
- Righteous companionship benefits believers in this life and the Hereafter.
- Faith fluctuates, so believers should ask Allah for steadfastness and avoid pride.
- Remembering death should reshape priorities, repentance, and commitment to the Hereafter.
- Maintain the Quran, five daily prayers, righteous company, and regular supplication.
- Assess worship by its continuing effects and prepare spiritually before Ramadan.
- Avoid prolonged premarital relationships and advise against the dishonesty and oppression they can cause.
- Conclude with supplications, funeral prayer, and practical burial arrangements.
In the khateeb's words
“And that is the benefits of having righteous company. Not only is it something that is beneficial in this life, but in the hereafter as well.”
“But then remember death and things change. And we see when we have death in the family, how our iman increases. And it's a reality check.”
“if you want to see if your ibadah was accepted, then see what happens afterwards. Did Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make it easy for you to do other things?”
For the dinner table
The khateeb reminded us that good friends help us in this life and may even seek us in the Hereafter. Our faith rises and falls, so we should not become proud; we should ask Allah for steadfastness, stay close to the Quran, pray on time, and remember death. After Ramadan or another season of worship, we can look at what becomes easier afterward as a sign of whether worship changed us. He warned that ending a long relationship dishonestly to marry someone else is sinful and oppressive, and urged the community to advise one another. The khutbah ended with prayers for guidance, oppressed Muslims, and the deceased, along with an invitation to attend the janazah.
- What kind of friend helps you become a better Muslim?
- What is one good habit you want to keep after Ramadan?
- How can we give honest advice kindly when someone is making a harmful choice?
