Hold to Sunnah when believers disagree
“If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala opens up any spiritual state for us, we should not delay the matter.”
In times of disagreement, believers should cultivate taqwa, receive sincere counsel, preserve unity through obedience, and hold firmly to the Prophet’s Sunnah and the way of the rightly guided successors.
The khutbah in 6 steps
- Introduces the foundational hadith of al-Irbad ibn Sariya and its emotionally powerful farewell-like counsel.
- Explains sincere advice, trembling hearts, tears, and the spiritual responsiveness of the Companions.
- Uses the Tabuk passage to illustrate companions grieving because they could not participate or spend in Allah’s path.
- Defines taqwa as awareness of Allah’s observation, accountability, and judgment.
- Applies the hadith to family and communal unity through listening and obedience.
- Concludes by urging firm adherence to the Prophet’s Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs.
In the khateeb's words
“It is that advice which is not given to put the person down, to criticize the individual, but to uplift them, to guide them, to help them.”
“when we are in any particular hal if Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala opens up any spiritual state for us we should not delay the matter”
For the dinner table
Today’s khutbah reflected on the Prophet’s heartfelt advice and how deeply it moved his companions. The khateeb reminded us that advice should come from sincere care and help people grow. He explained taqwa as remembering that Allah knows our words, actions, and hearts, and that we are accountable to Him. This awareness should move us to do good and correct our mistakes. When our hearts feel especially connected to Allah, we should make the most of that moment by continuing our dua. He also urged us to hold firmly to the Prophet’s sunnah and the way of his rightly guided successors during times of disagreement.
- What helps you listen when someone gives you advice?
- What would you like to thank Allah for or ask Him for tonight?
- How might remembering that Allah sees you change a choice you make tomorrow?
